Wizarding Government, a guide to positions and departments

In Australia, the bodies that govern the wizarding societies are known as the Ministries of Magic. There are two levels of ministry: state and federal. On Tallygarunga, the majority of ministry characters played will belong to the Victorian state ministry: the Victorian Ministry of Magic or the VMM.Magical Law Enforcement
Above that, the Australian Federal Ministry of Magic (or: the Australian Ministry of Magic, or AFMM) governs wizarding society across all states and territories. Just as in the state and federal levels of muggle government, the AFMM cannot interfere in matters that are considered "state controlled", nor can the VMM interfere in matters that are under "federal control".
Each ministry is led by a Minister for Magic, who is guided by the heads of various departments in making decisions that affect wizarding society across their jurisdiction. These are the current departments recognised in the Victorian Ministry of Magic.
The most visible of the government departments, Magical Law Enforcement (MLE) oversees all decisions relating to wizarding crime, prevention and management. In addition to the state-wide Auror Force, MLE also employs specialised investigators, administrative assistants, analysts, informants and operates the state wizarding prison Diemandirri.MLE - Auror Force
Technically a sub-branch of MLE, the VMM's Auror Force is a state-wide network of aurors sworn to serve and protect wizarding society. Aurors may be posted to particular towns, or operate out of the main headquarters in Melbourne. A wide range of tasks and teams are available within the Auror Force, including investigative and unusual homicide squads, patrol positions, and undercover operations.Magical Education
The Magical Education department (MEd) oversees all wizarding education across the state. Victoria is fortunate enough to have a wizarding school that is fully state-owned, and thus has a greater influence over Tallygarunga than it does over Penrose and Greyheme. Leading members of this department are usually former teachers, and this is where decisions are made in regard to the syllabus, holiday structure, home schooling regulations, and where to hold the annual Victorian Wizarding Educator's Conference.Muggle-Magical Co-operation
Arguably one of the more important (if under-appreciated) departments within the ministry, Muggle-Magical Co-operation (MMC) monitors the interactions of muggle and wizarding society. This is also the department that receives applications for muggles to be introduced to the truth of the wizarding world. MMC works in partnership with MLE to ensure that wizarding society stays safely off the radar, but still functions successfully.Commerce & Business
Although most businesses will still be subject to muggle business laws and regulations, Commerce & Business (C&B) bridges gaps, particularly regarding the trading of magical items and ingredients. C&B also monitors wizard banking institutions, grants permits to trade, and regulates wizarding markets.Creatures & Unfortunate Incidents
Australia is known for its wide range of wildlife ready and waiting to cause your unfortunate end. Australia's magical creatures are no exception to this, and include the Drop Bear, the Hoop Snake, the not-so-extinct Tasmanian Tiger, a deep-sea monster known only as "Snowball" and many more. Creatures & Unfortunate Incidents (CUI) works to identify Australia's unique magical wildlife, protect these weird and usual species, and prevent wildlife-related tragedies.Magical Sports & Games
When incidents do occur, CUI also works to ensure that the true nature of these rare and wonderful animals is no more to muggles than a whisper of a myth on a summer's day.
Sport is an enormous part of Australian culture, thus an entire ministry department dedicated to ensuring sporting excellence. Magical Sports & Games (MSG) develops and implements programs that encourage young Aussie wizards to take up Quidditch and other sports, provides venues and training facilities, and works with other MSG departments across the country (and internationally) to organise large-scale sporting events. Two organisations that work closely with MSG are Quidditch Australia (governing body of the national Quidditch league) and Quidditch Victoria (QA's state counterpart).Magical Research & Innovation
According to other departments, "here be the nerds". Magical Research & Innovation (MRI) is largely devoted to exploring ideas that could benefit wizarding society. MRI works in partnership with wizarding universities, seeking out the best ideas from the best minds. MRI has a large laboratory for practical experimentation, and has largely been focused on magi-tech innovations of late, integrating muggle technology with magic's capabilities.Curious Infrastructure
Wizarding architecture is fundamentally weird, and requires a great deal of planning and fore-thought. Curious Infrastructure (CI) manages all projects that require construction outside of regular dimensions, granting permits and conducting site safety evaluations. CI also operates and maintains the portkey and Telegraph networks, as well as public post services.Magical Maladies & Health Services
Magical Maladies & Health Services (MMHS) oversees the operation of all public and private wizarding health projects. From the main hospital, St Ringos in Melbourne, to smaller, specialised wards in muggle hospitals, and independent practitioners, all guidelines come from MMHS. MMHS also allocates funding for research into magic-related illnesses, and health education programs for young wizards and witches.
