+Deeeeeply insecure about whether people really like her
+Starting to feel the exhaustion of putting so much into her work and getting average returns.
+Unaware that she tries too hard.
+She's trying so hard to be a cool, awesome teacher. So hard.
+Keeps a stash of novelty and vintage aprons in her office to wear while she teaches to prevent disaster on her clothes
+Very fond of her pet cat, Nanny. Nanny, in turn, seems pretty chill.
+Throws a lot of parties and whatnot but doesn't seem to have any close friends.
+DO NOT leave a mess in her classroom. Seriously. Please.
+Leaves homemade candies and treats in the staff room. Be careful, she likes to experiment with potion/sweets crossovers.
In two words, many have and will most likely continue to describe Minnie as… Extra AF. She has very high expectations for herself and genuinely feels that the approval and acceptance of others is the highest honor she can receive. Even when she does garner praise, there’s always the little voice of doubt that asks if they’re only humoring her.
While that sounds insane (which she’s sometimes aware of) it isn’t all bad. Minnie puts everything she has into everything she can and it’s easy to tell from the quality of her work. Her lesson plans are streamlined for optimal learning and a bit of fun, her rare parties are themed and color schemed to death, and her outfits always match. She tries and she tries HARD, which is exhausting by her own admission but when the compliments roll it, it has to be worth it. All of the efforts have left very little time for any kind of social life beyond shallow chatting and the occasional hangout. It's a lonely life and she thinks she'd like to change it, but how much does she have left to give without being overbearing and running people off?
Minnie is very optimistic about being able to change the world through being a teacher and still has a lesson or two to learn about how things actually work. Maybe she can do some good...just maybe not in that Hallmark movie “teacher saves the school” way she’s always hoped for.
Minnie loathes messes and will break her friendly demeanor with students who dare leave messes in her classroom. It’s really the only rule she’s strict on, for fear of the students getting the idea that she’s not cool or their friend.
Standing at just under six feet tall, Minnie might be imposing if it weren’t for...well almost everything else about her. Her gangly phase isn’t too far behind her and she still thinks of herself as being all arms and legs, destined to live up to her childhood nickname of “Giraffe Girl” (No one said kids in her first year were creative. Just observant.) With this degree of self-consciousness present, Minnie is very determined to compensate for her size in other areas of her appearance.
Her long, dark brown hair is well-maintained, though one rainy day and the humidity can wreak havoc on her hard work faster than you can say “not enough mousse in the bangs.” It’s kept down, more often than not, except when she’s teaching or otherwise working. Too many times has she cleaned frog spawn out of the ends of her hair during a careless move too close to the table. When it is up, Minnie favors a high ponytail for the sake of being able to whip it around when she thinks no one is watching.
When otherwise faced with a workday of having her face melted off by a steaming cauldron, Minnie sticks to basic makeup. A little eyeliner, maybe some lipstick...for all her hangups about her body, she does have a soft spot for her eyes (a self-proclaimed shade of “kind of a fawny brown?”) and lips, which lend themselves to whatever lip color she feels like giving a go.
Much like with her makeup, clothes are also something to be kept simple in her opinion. A staggering variety of dresses make up the majority of Minnie’s wardrobe, as they’re so much easier to find in the proper size than pants. When it gets a little colder, she finds herself some tall socks, tights, or just stick those size 10 clomping feet in some boots or flats and grit her teeth. She’s determined like that.
On what could be considered a fairly unremarkable day in the middle of June 1987, Minnie Amal Darwish was born into a slightly upper-middle-class family in Hamilton, New Zealand. She was the second of Nancy and Amir’s children with her older sister, Hyacinth, predating her by three years. The Darwish’s marriage would only last another five years before a divorce that was amicable but definite.
Nancy moved her daughters to Melbourne after a job offer at the local hospital. Being only five years old, Minnie adjusted to her new life with little trouble and often visited her father and a large brood of paternal aunts, uncles, and such during summers. Her mother’s family in Australia, while much smaller, was also a large part of Minnie and Hyacinth’s lives growing up. Their mother’s position as a Healer meant long hours at work and less time that she’d like with her children. The void was filled by the girls’ Nana Betty, who took a liking to her youngest granddaughter.
While Hyacinth was running around doing her own thing, Minnie spent her time away from primary school sticking close to the old woman, who taught her everything she knows and loves about being a good hostess, baker, and household potion maker. When the time came to go off to school, moving away from her beloved grandmother was possibly the hardest thing little Minnie had experienced in her life.
Attending Tally was interesting enough for her. Sorted into Bourke and surrounded by people who were as friendly as she had grown to be, but perhaps a little more exuberant. She was still quietly competitive, always aiming to go a little bit further with all of her projects in efforts to garner praise from her teacher. In her third year, Minnie also joined the house Quidditch team at her father’s urging and insistence that her height and length of limbs would do her well as a Keeper. He wasn’t wrong.
Minnie left school with excellent marks, but very few friends. The constant filling of her time with extracurriculars and schoolwork hadn’t left much for socializing. Vowing to lighten up on herself for University, she enrolled a VMU and spent four years ignoring that promise in favor of a degree in Magical Education. Following that was three years of working as a private governess to an Australian family of wizards living in India for conservation work.
Spending so much time with the family ignited a sort of “save the world” attitude within Minnie. With her time as a governess at an end, she returned home and sought employment at the very school where she had spent her childhood trying to overachieve. It was three years ago that Minnie received the position of Potions professor and there she remains to this day.
At some point she’ll have to settle down and stop trying to be the teacher of the year...but not quite yet. Minnie is still obsessing over lesson plans that are practical and “fun” and being disappointed when students don’t rave about them. Her friend circle is still lacking, but she can be found on almost any weekend organizing some kind of staff mixer, bake sale for things like Billywig conservations, and any other excuse she can find to make appetizers and invent a themed beverage to serve. Her parents would like her to find someone and settle down like her sister, but there's still SO MUCH to do.
