Destry is a charming, ingenuous, risk-taking, sensitive, people-oriented individual who is also known to be a bit too stubborn for her own good. She is a person who strives to do the best for people she loves and for the causes that she strongly believes in. She is a person who is not afraid to voice an opinion she has, even when it is an unpopular one and tends to follow her instincts strongly over her brain. This is something that has led her down many a twisted path before and got her into situations where her own safety was at risk.
She has a deep intense love for conservation of the planet which Muggles and the Magical inhabit and this love does influence a lot of her decision making. This love is only challenged and defeated by the love she has for her Daughter, Dagny. As a social creature she likes to be around people and though she does not always feel comfortable being the centre of attention Des has never been a wall flower. That said, she only has a small group of friends, as she doesn’t place her trust in people easily.
Tactile and adaptable she isn’t worried about facing new challenges, though prefers those challenges to be something she can psychically get her hands on. On more than one occasion she has been described as a ‘feisty little pixie’. A description that is, perhaps, more accurate than she would like it too be.
There is a distinct lack of care for herself that can and does taint a great deal of her actions. She will go without things so that her Daughter and the animals she campaigns so hard for have everything they need. Through her Mother’s side she comes from a prestigious Pure-Blood background and does very little to live up to the expectations that come along with that, following a similar line as her Father, believing that the old fashioned values are out dated, archaic and just, sometimes, completely ridiculous.
Destry stands at around five foot three inches and weighs in at about one hundred and twenty pounds; she is someone who always seems to stand on the edge of being just a little too skinny for her size. Though she seems small on the outside, she is more muscle than fat something that is due to the fact that she has a very active lifestyle. Her legs are a little too muscular for her own liking, but since she spends almost all of her time on her feet. Her body shape, hourglass, would one that would perhaps be more flattering if she was larger. Destry is aware on how to dress to flatter her shape but rarely finds occasion to do so and tends to be more comfortable in a standard pair of jeans and a top that’s much easier to move in – hence it is often baggy. These clothes also tend to be covered in some kind of food or fluid, whether from her daughter, herself or the animals she cares for.
A diamond shaped face that is framed by long dark brown hair that when left too its own devises tends to fall straight. It takes some serious magical moose too get even a hint of curl and body to it. Destry often wears her locks long, falling below her shoulders. Her eyes are such a dark brown that occasionally they look black. She rarely wears make-up and most often has her hair tied up out of her way. There is sometimes an assortment of food in her hair, again from her child etc.
“Watch out for loonies and fuckwits!” this was a sentence that Destry heard a lot when growing up, every time she headed off to school or even out with friends. It was always the parting sentiments of her loud, brash but well meaning Father. This eccentric man was the reason that she was born in a place called Mumbles. He’d dragged his heavily pregnant wife there for the name alone. According to her Mother, as she went into labour, he’d been far too interested in chatting to a local Muggle too even notice. He eventually caught on and whipped his disgruntled wife off to a hospital.
Destry was not the only Roebuck born that day, two minutes and nineteen seconds after she’d come screaming into the world she was followed by a Brother, who was then named Churchill.
The twins somewhat odd names came later. Mrs Roebuck came from one of the older more prestigious Australian Wizarding families and firmly believed in seeing a Naming Seer. Mr Roebuck was a earth bound northern British Wizard and didn’t take with such nonsense as letting someone else peek into the future of his children and thus give them destiny appropriate names. He loved his wife though – perhaps almost as much as he loved Hedgehogs – and went along with her too aforementioned Seer. Only too get bored halfway through declare the whole thing a ‘load of bollocks’ and use the small trickle of information the Seer had given to name his children.
Young Destry spent the first couple of years in England with her family, her Father continuing his study of the Hedgehog and her Mother rising within the ranks of the Ministry. It was clear that the twins each took different parents. Destry was a softer toned version of her Father, joining him on his coutrywalks and though not quite as armoured with Hedgehogs as him certainly developed her passion for the environment, animals and plants from him. Churchill was took after their serious, ambitious and traditional Mother.
Life in the idyllic British countryside came to an abrupt halt just before they were due to start at Hogwarts, the halt was caused by their Mother wanting to go back to Australia and being given a good position in the Ministry over there. So the Roebuck family went and the twins ended up attending Tallygarunga.
Life at school was not worth much a mention; though the twins were close they were also very different people. Destry was rougher than Churchill and spent more time in detention for scraping with other children than Churchill really thought was acceptable. When she wasn’t being caught doing something so very teenage-like, she spent fair amounts of time outside studying the grounds, the wildlife and everything she could. She followed Quidditch passionately, though it became clear from very early flying lessons that she was very much a witch whose feet should remain on the ground.
Churchill, however, was studious and polite – though had developed the impressive set on lungs that belonged to his Father – achieving well in all exams, outstanding in lessons, having a small select group of friends and always moving towards his ambitions.
They both graduated one with outstanding test results and the other not doing too bad. University was a short term stop for the energy filled Destry, sitting behind a desk and learning something she felt could be dealt with much better hands on and her chance to do just that came when she got involved with a guest speaker in her Magizoology class.
He was an older wizard with a lot of experience within the field Destry was interested in and so, when he offered to take her with him, she quit university and left with him. The years that followed were everything she’d dreamed it was. It was a dream that shattered when she peed on a stick and the words ‘Pregnant’ appeared.
Her lover wasn’t interested in giving up the life he’d cut out for both of them too settle down and become a parent, giving Destry the choice between the unborn child and him. She choose her child and headed back to Australia.
Nine months later she gave birth to a little girl, who she called Dagny.
Though being a single Mother with a baby that seemed to catch every illness going didn’t stop her, instead she just localised her passions and after scraping together the money she’d saved when travelling she joined together was a few other people who shared the same passion for conservation and they started a safari within the state of Victoria that became the home too Magical and Non-Magical creatures alike, the aim off the park was and still is too educated the magical world on the importance of the animals that inhabit the same world as them but also the environments and behaviours that come with magical and non-magical creatures.
Two years later – now the present- the safari is finally breaking ground and Destry is not only a keeper, educator and co-owner of the Safari, she also is one of the people that actively go into schools, public spaces and places of work to try and not only raise awareness, but also funds for it.
